Canada’s skilled-trades sector is receiving increased attention as governments, employers and training organizations prepare for workforce needs across construction, housing, transportation, manufacturing, natural resources and infrastructure.
Apprenticeship Registrations Reached a Record High
Statistics Canada reported 101,541 new apprenticeship registrations in 2024, an increase of 5.9% from 2023 and the highest number recorded since the current data series began in 2008. Rising registrations show strong interest, but Canada must also help apprentices complete workplace hours, technical training and certification.

Why Red Seal Certification Matters
The Red Seal Program develops common national standards for participating trades. Workers who meet provincial or territorial certification requirements and pass the applicable examination can receive a Red Seal endorsement. As employers compete for qualified workers, recognized certification can help candidates demonstrate trade knowledge and mobility.
Preparing for Opportunity
Demand does not guarantee employment. Employers still look for workers who can operate safely, solve problems, communicate clearly and complete work to an acceptable standard. Apprentices should record hours accurately, maintain contact with their apprenticeship authority and prepare early for certification.
