Begin With a Hazard Assessment

Use the Hierarchy of Controls
The preferred approach begins with eliminating the hazard. When that is not possible, workers may use substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. PPE is important, but it is usually the final layer of protection.
Inspect Tools and Control Energy
Check tools for damage, missing guards, worn parts, fluid leaks and unsafe adjustments. Before servicing equipment, follow the required energy-isolation procedure, release stored energy and verify a zero-energy state. Turning off a switch may not be enough.
Housekeeping and Communication
Clear walkways, prompt spill cleanup, proper material storage and good control of cords and hoses reduce slips, trips, fires and equipment damage. Clear communication is also essential during lifting, equipment startup, vehicle movement, testing and emergency situations.
Avoid Shortcuts
Familiar work can create overconfidence. Professional tradespeople follow safe procedures even when a task appears simple. Hazards, near misses, injuries and equipment defects should be reported so the workplace can correct the cause before a more serious incident occurs.
