Training, examinations and certification

02Technical-training levelsWhat is generally covered at each stage of training.
Level 1

Safety, tools, mathematics, drawings, work organization, materials, basic masonry systems and introductory restoration.

Level 2

Advanced masonry systems, stonework, fireplaces, chimneys, refractory materials, restoration and specialized applications.

Level 3

Advanced chimneys, fireplaces, refractory work, specialized masonry, stone systems, restoration and job organization.

03Examinations, grading and passing requirementsSelect to view the supplied requirements and notes.
  • Levels 1 and 2: in-school assessment is 40% theory and 60% practical; 80% in-school plus 20% standardized exam.
  • A practical competency assessment is required at each level.
  • Level 3 requires at least 70% in school and completion of the practical assessment before the Red Seal exam.
  • Red Seal passing mark: 70%.
04Foundation or entry-training pathwaySelect to view the supplied requirements and notes.
  • Approximately 630 hours (about 21 weeks).
  • Standardized written exam and Level 1 practical assessment.
  • At least 70% overall.
  • Credit for Level 1 and 400 work-based hours.
