Installs, tests, commissions, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs gas piping, appliances and equipment generally rated up to 400,000 BTU/h or 120 kW, using natural gas, propane, biogas, hydrogen and other approved gases.

  • Grade 12 English, Math 11 and Physics 11 recommended.
02Technical-training levelsWhat is generally covered at each stage of training.
Level 1

Safety, codes, gas properties, electrical theory and controls, piping/tubing design, burners, ignition, ventilation, air supply, planning and basic commissioning.

Level 2

Advanced design, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, combustion verification, controls and service.

  • Level 1 in-school: 85% theory and 15% practical; final mark is 80% in-school and 20% standardized exam.
  • Level 2 in-school: 75% theory and 25% practical; no separate standardized Level 2 exam identified.
  • Red Seal passing mark: 70%.

  • Red Seal Plumbers and Steamfitters/Pipefitters may receive Level 1 and up to 1,500 workplace hours.
  • Red Seal Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanics may receive Levels 1 and 2 and up to 1,500 workplace hours.
  • Maximum workplace credit is 1,500 hours.
